The writer says President Trump disregards the wise intentions of America's Founding Fathers.

One of the bedrock principles that has contributed to the greatness of our republic has been the scrupulous separation of church and state.

In their enduring wisdom, the Founding Fathers warned that a country predicated on religious precepts could incrementally slide into a full-fledged theocracy. A theocracy is a form of government in which priests rule in the name of God or a god.

All over the world, we have witnessed how theocracies dominate with an iron fist, repressing individual freedoms and liberty at every turn. Examples are such as Yemen, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Afghanistan. Citizens enmeshed in these regimes are continually having to look over their shoulders to avert incurring the wrath of regimes sanctimoniously claiming that they are ordained to do God's work. Apparently, President Trump has not heeded the Founding Father's admonitions.

Recently we witnessed the sorry spectacle of our president ordering the use of tear gas and rubber bullets on a crowd of peaceful demonstrators to clear a path to St. John's Church in Washington, D.C. There he stood smugly clutching a Bible overhead, wrapping himself in the mantle of religion, implying that his regime has a type of divine underpinning.

Sadly, this plays very well to many of his supporters. This deplorable conduct constitutes a stinging affront to those who place a high value on true religion. I never thought this would happen in America.
