Gresham needs leaders who will support a parks and recreation district to benefit children and families

Recently, I watched a local political ad which I found troubling. It attempted to scare viewers with images of crime and violence, and repeated themes from Donald Trump whose values most do not share in Gresham. Those politics degrade our community. Those same politics have rationalized cutting Gresham Parks & Recreation to the bone (by over 25% since 2005).

In the most recent budget, a mere 3% of the General Fund is allocated to parks, far below comparable cities. Gresham is at the bottom of Oregon cities in per-capita local parks spending.

As a longtime parks volunteer and advocate, I know we need leaders who will support a parks and recreation district in order to have sustainable programming that benefits children and families. That is why I am supporting the candidate for Position 5 who is running a positive campaign focused on our shared values.

Dave Dyk is a breath of fresh air. He has championed engaging the community in bringing about a future vision for parks and recreation here in Gresham, and using budget processes that are transparent and open.

I urge my fellow Gresham residents to vote Dave Dyk for City Council in the upcoming election.
