EDITOR'S NOTE: The Outlook is providing it's recommendations on local school board races appearing on the May 18 ballot. This endorsement addresses the Centennial School Board, which has one contested race and three uncontested races.

POSITION 6, At Large

CANDIDATES: Rod Boettcher (incumbent) and Erica Fuller

Rod Boettcher has been a member of the Centennial School Board for an impressive 29 years, creating a legacy few will ever match. His willingness to volunteer time and energy for nearly three decades speaks volumes about his commitment to education and student well-being. And no doubt, if re-elected Boettcher would continue to serve as a reliable and thoughtful member of this board.

FULLERBut after 29 years, we're recommending a change in leadership.

School board, city council and legislative seats have never been intended as career destinations. At some point, those who have held the same office for decades should step aside and give others a chance to serve.

With the social and political shifts in East Multnomah County and across the U.S. has come a surge of interest on the part of BIPOC candidates. The voting public is asking for greater diversity and that elected leaders more closely reflect the populations they represent.

The Centennial School District is 57 percent students of color, which should justifiably be reflected by those who make up the School Board.

Erica Fuller is a Black woman, community organizer and small business owner, who graduated from Centennial High School, and who's lived in the Rockwood neighborhood her entire life.

As a board member, she'll help students by working to remove obstacles that stand in the way of their academic success — food insecurity, homelessness and health concerns.

When a majority of Centennial students see her as an elected member of the board, they'll see the potential in themselves, and know anything is possible.

RECOMMENDATION: Elect Erica Fuller
