GLADFELTERThe Gresham community has always pulled together to make things happen, to get through challenging times as well as celebrate the good. Now more than ever Gresham is facing real problems. We must come together to deliver on common-sense solutions that will lead to a better tomorrow for Gresham.

Our community and region are facing a surge in crime not seen in decades. Half measures and "duct tape" policies will not improve the situation. It's our job as a city, to help ensure the safety and security of our residents. Therefore, it is vital that we properly fund and support our police department. Without proper resources, our officers and support staff cannot adequately meet the demand for crime prevention nor case resolution in Gresham.

We must bring staffing levels up to national standards and re-institute specialty teams that are trained for specific needs such as detectives. It doesn't end with proper support for police, we also need to continue to invest in our youth through prevention and other programs.

Beyond security, first responders are high on the priority list for additional support. Our fire and emergency services department must be well equipped to meet our community's needs. It takes personnel, expensive equipment, and regular training to handle the types of calls they receive every day. Gresham residents need to know fire and emergency services will be there when minutes count.

The homelessness is another key issue that we can solve together. We all know that our region has been in the national spotlight because of the area's homeless epidemic.

In Gresham, we have instituted several measures that have made a substantial difference in inviting people into services that have gone a long way toward helping the most vulnerable among us while keeping our community safe and clean. We can't, however, become complacent. We must continue to address homelessness with compassion, while keeping our streets, parks and sidewalks clean and safe. Our homeless services team, does magnificent work responding to this very complex problem. We must make sure they are well-staffed, resourced, and supported.

It has been my honor to work on these issues as your city councilor, but the work is not done. As complex as these problems are, the path to solutions is simple if we all come together not as the bickering partisans that dominate the news, but as a community that

loves the city we call home.

This coming November's election could be one of the most important in recent memory for our city. Please get informed and vote. Every vote counts as we have seen many times.
