Barn Museum hosts ‘Mega Floods’ of the Gorge talk

The Troutdale Historical Society and The Vista House have invited Jim Urbaniak, president of the Oregon Agate and Mineral Society, to speak about “Mega Floods of the Columbia River Gorge” at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 23, at the Barn Museum, 732 E. Historic Columbia River Highway.

Urbaniak’s talk will feature empirical evidence that determined the history and impact of the Missoula Floods on the Columbia River Gorge. He will focus on the Channeled Scablands terrain that was formed by large lava flows to substantiate the Missoula Floods claim.

The event is free to the public, and light refreshments will be served.

Bank of America Foundation grant helps Human Solutions

Homeless families are still seeking overnight shelter in droves, despite warmer weather.

The Bank of America Foundation has awarded a $10,000 grant to Human Solutions to help provide emergency shelter, permanent housing and case management services to homeless families.

The grant supports the Homeless Families Program at Human Solutions, which serves more than 700 homeless parents and children on any given night.

The program helps families permanently overcome homelessness through a combination of emergency shelter, affordable housing, and intensive case management.

“More homeless families than ever need help this winter, and the need is still great even though we are over the cold spell,” said Human Solutions Executive Director Jean DeMaster. “Support from the Bank of America Foundation helps make it possible for Human Solutions to provide not only emergency shelter, but other critical support services such as affordable housing and case management. Homeless families need all of these things to get back on their feet.”
