Eastside Theater presents 'Anne of Green Gables'
Gresham's Eastside Theater Company is presenting "Anne of Green Gables" and is holding a drive-thru event for ticket sales and a food drive to get folks excited about the play.
Like many other performances during COVID-19, "Anne of Green Gables" will be available to audiences via the internet. The road to the production was a rocky one, prompting the theater group to change course multiple times as pandemic safety rules kept changing.
"Anne of Green Gables" will be filmed and available to view online between June 1-20.
Tickets are $10, which is good for a single viewing.
"An entire family can view the performance together with a single ticket," said Alan Cohen, president of the board of Eastside Theater Company.
Tickets can be purchased online at: ci.ovationtix.com/35546/production/1047800.
There will also be some very limited opportunities to watch the film as part of an audience, and the theater will announce those opportunities soon.
"Anne of Green Gables" is based on the classic 1908 novel of the same name by Lucy MI donaud Montgomery. The novel tells the story of 11-year-old orphan Anne Shirley and her adventures after being adopted by brother and sister farmers on Prince Edward Island in Canada.
The book has been the source for countless films, plays, musicals and television shows.
The drive-thru promotional event will be held from 2-5 p.m. Saturday, May 29, at Riverview Community Bank, 225 N.E. Burnside Road.
At the event, the actors will appear in costume and Eastside will be handing out microwave popcorn for folks to munch while they watch "Anne of Green Gables" at home. The company will also be selling show tickets and raffle tickets. They are also partnering with SnowCap Community Charities for food drive at the Saturday drive-thru.
"Everyone should stop by, say hi, get some popcorn, and drop off food donations for SnowCap," Cohen said.
The raffle will feature prizes including roundtrip airfare for two anywhere Alaska Airlines flies, an Apple iPad courtesy of Riverview Community Bank and many more prizes provided by local businesses and organizations.
"We initially did this (raffle) in 2019 as part of our Fill-A-Bag partnership with SnowCap. We were pretty successful at that point, raising more than $4,200 with some great prizes," Cohen said.
Raffle tickets are $5 and the drawing will be Monday, June 21. People don't need to be present to win. Tickets and more details are available online, eastsidetheater.com/2021raffle. Eastside gets half the raffle proceeds and SnowCap gets half.
"As for everyone, this past year has been super challenging for us," said Cohen.
The troupe usually stages four or five shows per season and the majority of its funding comes from ticket sales, funds raised at the performances and student tuition.
"That has all but disappeared this past year," Cohen said.
Pandemic safety rules made rehearsals difficult. A show was canceled and other adjustments were made.
"We're hoping to get a strong level of support from the community, in terms of supporting us through purchasing a show ticket, or a raffle ticket," Cohen said.
