6A GIRLS HOOPS - Centennial outscores the Gophers 12-0 in the second period Tuesday

The Centennial girls basketball team clamped down on defense and raced away with a 49-23 win at Gresham on Tuesday night.

The Eagles blanked Gresham in the second quarter, turning what was a tight one-point contest into a lopsided 23-8 Centennial lead heading into the halftime locker room.

The pivotal flurry featured the Centennial tandem of Melissa Dailey and Chelsey Miller. The duo hooked up twice on nice passes that left Miller with a clear path to the basket for easy points. Dailey held onto the ball to cap the scoring spurt with a 3-pointer from out top.

'Mike Henderson is our coach in charge of defense, and we've been focusing really hard on that in practice,' Centennial head coach Jeff Stanek said. 'The first quarter it was all back and forth, but we shut them down in the second and the game changed. We gained some confidence and knocked down some shots.'
