Gresham puts up three TDs in the first quarter to win 48-15

by: THE OUTLOOK: DAVID BALL - Greshams Gregonta Brown breaks into the open during the first half of Fridays 48-15 win over Hillsboro. Gresham took care of business quickly Friday night to punch its ticket into the 6A football bracket with a 48-15 win over Hillsboro in the play-in qualifier game.

The Gophers needed just 19 seconds to get on the scoreboard, covering 84 yards in just two plays on its opening possession. Running back Gregonta Brown had the highlight, dodging a crowd of tacklers in the middle of the field and breaking loose for a 63-yard TD run.

Little more than a minute later, Gresham’s Maleka Arango stepped in front of a sideline pass and returned the interception 31 yards for a score.

Gresham was so comfortable moving the ball on the ground that facing 3rd-and-10, the coaches called for a run up the middle. Brown took the handoff and burst through the middle to pick up the first down.

But he was far from done.

He cut toward the sideline, spun away from two tackles and went 59 yards before being bumped out of bounds a few strides short of the goal line. Teammate Sirgeo Hoffman finished it off with a 4-yard run, taking on a tackler and spilling over the goal line for a 20-0 lead before the first quarter was finished.

The Gophers would make it 34-0 by halftime and were never challenged.

The win puts Gresham (4-6) into the 6A playoffs, which begin next Friday. The OSAA is expected to release the bracket over the weekend. Out of the 10 play-in winners Friday only two, Crater and Century, are ranked below Gresham at No. 32.

“It’s nice to get in, but whoever we face next week is going to be a huge step up,” Gresham coach Todd Nagel said.
