by: THE OUTLOOK: DAVID BALL - Barlows Garrett Stauffer lets loose with a throw in the shot put. He finished second in the event and would also take second in the discus later in the day.TROUTDALE — The Barlow boys track team surrendered only a pair of third-place points in the throwing events Wednesday to power their way to an 87-58 win at Reynolds.

Teammates Kobie Ham and Garrett Stauffer were clearly the best throwers in the shot put arena, each taking aim at the 50-foot chalk line at the end of the pit. Ham landed the metal ball past that barrier on his first throw of the finals to win the event at 50-feet-11 1/4-inches.

“We were both trying to get to that line,” Ham said. “It felt really good, really relaxed on that throw.”

Stauffer came in second at 49-2 1/4, while Barlow’s Tucker Wendland held off Reynolds’ top thrower by almost a foot to complete the 1-2-3 sweep.

Ham and Stauffer combined for a 1-2 finish in the discus (136-4), while Alex Gleason and Garrett Childress repeated that feat in the javelin (141-9).

The Barlow girls scored first-place points in almost half of the events to pick up a 95-46 win over Reynolds and a 91-54 win over St. Mary’s.

Look for expanded coverage of both duals in the Friday, April 25, print edition.
