GRESHAM — Gresham had outscored their opponents 15-7 during non-league games this season, and in their Mt. Hood Conference season opener, the Gophers provided more of the same.

Ignacio Alvarado scored a pair of goals for Gresham as the Gophers went onto defeat Oregon City 2-0 on Wednesday afternoon.

Alvarado got the Gophers on the board early with his first goal coming in the seventh minute. Gresham midfielder Diego Romero crossed the ball to Alvarado, who put on a series of nifty moves before sending a rocket into the back of the net.

"When we are on the field, we like to be aggressive and physical, especially on offense," Alvarado said. "Honestly, I wouldn't be able to score if it wasn't for our midfielders. We just bring a lot of hard work and dedication on offense."

Oregon City wouldn't receive their first good look until midway through the first half. Brandon Bautista would line up a free kick from about 25 yards away, but Gresham keeper Sergio Aguilar made a great diving save to turn the Pioneers away.

It would be Oregon City's only solid opportunity at a goal in the first 40 minutes as Gresham took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
