OREGON CITY — The Barlow girls soccer team came up with go-ahead goals three times to earn a hard-fought 3-2 win over Oregon City in a battle atop the Mount Hood Conference on Monday night.
Abi Hoffman converted penalty shots in each half, only to see Oregon City answer each time. The Pioneers tied the game at two when Abi Willett pounced on a deflected ball on the left side. Barlow goalie Lisa Martin was guarding the near side with a hand on the post, while a defender Rianna Strain raced across from the middle of the field to challenge the ball. Willett used a quick touch to send a roller curving away from the keeper and inside the far post.
Barlow earned a series of throw-ins to move the ball from the tip of its 18-yard box across midfield to the same part of the field on Oregon City's side. That's where Bruins' striker Hoffman found enough space along the right side to hit a perfectly-placed shot inside the far post for the winning goal with 9:32 to play.
Oregon City was awarded a free kick with 17 seconds left, but a Barlow defender lifted a leg high to deflect the ball off target. The Pioneers hustled to send a corner kick to the front of the goal, but couldn't connect on a shot before time expired.
The win leaves Barlow (8-1-2) in charge atop the Mount Hood Conference — four points ahead of second-place Central Catholic. The Bruins host Centennial at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
