CORVALLIS — The Barlow girls water polo team hung tough with powerhouse Newberg in the first half before giving way to the Tigers in an 11-5 loss in Friday's 6A semifinals.

Newberg coach Cari Blanchard came to the edge of the pool and implored Stella Byles to foul any time the ball came near Barlow's Rochelle Beavers, forcing the Bruins to restart their offense numerous times.

Despite the increased attention, Beavers converted a penalty shot with less than a minute on the clock to send Barlow into halftime trailing only 3-2.

The Tigers came out of the break and scored a pair of quick goals — the last coming when Mackenzie Russell disrupted a Bruins' power play with a steal on the perimeter leading her to a 1-on-1 chance against the goalie for a 5-2 Tigers' lead.

Barlow bounced back Saturday and beat West Albany 8-6 in the third-place match.

Newberg beat Lincoln 7-4 in the title match.
