Estacada beats Corbett in thriller

ESTACADA — With both teams desperately needing a victory to stay alive for a chance at a postseason berth, it all came down to who could make a play at end of the game.
With 1.5 seconds left and Corbett down by one, the Cardinals were inbounding under their own basket and tried to get the ball to Dylan Oliver for a last-second jumper. But Cody Syring was able to knock the ball away, allowing Estacada to escape with the 53-52 victory on Tuesday, Jan. 23.
"We were switching on every screen and I wanted to stay back to make sure they weren't going to get an open look," Syring said. "It was like being a safety in football. I just had to read what their move was going to be and I just guessed right."
Estacada was led by Gabriel Martinez, who had 19 points in the Rangers first conference victory of the season. Syring also chipped in with 13 points and was 3-for-5 (.600) from behind the arc.
Dylan Paintner had a game-high 21 points for the Cardinals.
"The kids played their hearts out," Corbett head coach Don Carter said. "They played tough. As a coach, all you can ask for at the end of any game is one shot to win. We had three shots to win that bad boy."
• Estacada won the girls game 57-50.
