Team Score
Central Catholic (14-7)
Gresham (5-16)

The Gresham boys basketball team took league-contender Central Catholic to the wire Friday night before falling 59-53.

The Gophers trimmed it to a one-possession game three times in the final minute, but couldn't get the break they needed down the stretch. Central took care of the ball and sank nine straight foul shots to maintain the upper hand.

With the win, Central joins a jumble of two-loss teams atop the Mount Hood Conference — along with Barlow, Oregon City and Clackamas — with three leagues games remaining. Central Catholic (14-7) is the highest among that group at No. 12 in the OSAA rankings.

The teams traded the lead 10 times in the first half before a four-point swing in the final seconds gave the Rams space heading to the locker room.

Gresham missed a free throw, and Central connected on two quick passes that saw Darius Gakwasi beat the horn with a 3 for a 32-27 lead.

Gresham's Ethan Abrahamson knocked down six 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 32 points.
