What looked like a walk in the park for Gresham's baseball team in the first inning turned into crisis mode by the seventh, as the Gophers survived a late Centennial rally to claim a 6-4 win Wednesday night.

Gresham took a 6-0 lead into the seventh inning when Centennial put together its comeback.

Justin Funkhouser and Yoon Saechao hit back-to-back two-run singles to bring the Eagles within two.

Gresham catcher Ezra Samperi made a play at the plate to get the second out, and reliever Hunter Snow struck out the next batter to end the game.

The win pushes Gresham to 9-5 in league — one game back of Barlow and Central Catholic for second place.

Perhaps more importantly, it keeps the Gophers two games in front of Oregon City in the chase for the league's fourth and final automatic spot into the 6A playoffs. Those teams square off in a two-game set next week to close out the league schedule.

Gresham became one of three MHC schools to crack the OSAA's top-10 rankings.

Gresham (14-8) hosts Centennial (11-12) in the series finale at 5 p.m. Friday.
