Barlow junior Christian Maxey made quick work of his finals opponent for a 6-1, 6-1 win to claim the Mount Hood Conference singles title at Wednesday's district tennis tournament.
The match was over almost before it started.
Maxey earned four break points against Oregon City sophomore Michael Perez and eventually claimed the first game with a big backhand shot into the far corner.
Maxey turned back three break points in his first service game, then would solve his opponent once more for a 3-0 lead that had Perez expressing his frustration by slamming an extra ball into the court sending it bouncing 20 feet high during the switchover.
Even when Perez was at his best, Maxey was better.
During one late point, Perez hit a sharp forehand blast that looked sure to escape out the right side, but Maxey crossed the width of the court and whipped a sharp winner behind his stunned opponent, drawing audible appreciation from the crowd gathered around the courts.
• On an adjoining court, top-seeded Thien Nguyen and Kenton Bui out of David Douglas silenced a boisterous Oregon City pair David Engelman and Jaron Sorenson 6-4, 6-4 in the doubles finale.
The Pioneers pair celebrated numerous points with shouts and chest bumps to carry a slim lead through the early stages of play.
The Scots' duo rallied late in the first set, moving into the lead 5-4 when Nguyen hit a quick-reaction volley, followed by Bui with a lob over the top.
David Douglas never trailed again.
Central Catholic, David Douglas and Barlow tied atop the teams standings with 12 points — one win ahead of fourth-place Clackamas. The Rams claimed the conference title based on their dual-meet performance.
