David Douglas senior leads Scots to the basketball playoffs and wins state high jump title

OUTLOOK PHOTO: DAVID BALL - Savannah Proske has been a force across three sports, volleyball, basketball and track and field, throughout her David Douglas career. David Douglas senior Savannah Proske was a go-to player for the Scots no matter the venue. String up a net, and Proske would be there pounding down volleyballs on the other side. Roll out a basketball, and Proske would put it through the hoop for two points. Raise the bar, and Proske would sail over it for a state track and field title.

That versatility and her ability to come through when the stakes were at their highest made Proske our choice for East County's 'Outstanding Three-Sport Athlete' for 2017-18.

Proske capped her career with the Scots by having a gold medal draped around her neck at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field before hopping in her family's car and zipping north on Interstate-5, leaving her a whole half-an-hour to prepare for prom.

Proske won the 6A state high jump title, using a series of first-attempt clearances to keep the pressure on the rest of the field. She would emerge from a three-person jumble to win the title based on fewest misses.

"She competes at her best at the biggest moments," David Douglas track coach Isaac Frederick said. "She just finds a way to be the best one."

One of Proske's favorite memories comes from a 68-37 basketball loss to Oregon City — nothing to do with the game, but all about what happened before tip-off.

"I appreciated all of my senior nights — it was really nice knowing that my family was walking out there with me to be recognized," she said. "My parents (Jim and Christine) have always been there, and they are always giving up things to see me play — I appreciate that."

Her mother was a three-sport standout in her time at Franklin High holding the school record in the 100-meter dash, while also competing in soccer and swimming.

Proske will attend Northwest Christian College in Eugene where she will continue to compete in track and field.
