Corbett's defense held its ground in the second half, but the offense couldn't get over the goal line during a 12-0 loss to South Umpqua on Friday night.

The Cardinals received the second-half kickoff, and it appeared that the comeback was on when running back Thomas Eppley broke around the left side and zipped 48 yards down the home sideline before being shoved out of bounds inside the 20.

But that's where the drive stalled, a high snap on fourth-and-5 killing any chance of putting points on the scoreboard.

Corbett linebacker Matthew Krieger picked off a pass in the middle of the field to start the fourth quarter. The Cardinals would move the markers once before turning the ball over on downs at the 30-yard line.

"We only gave up 12 points this week, so we're feeling better about that," Corbett coach Nathan Aazzerah said. "Now, we've gotta figure out how to get the offense going."

South Umpqua scored the winning touchdown on its opening drive — a 15-play, 85-yard march that ended with running back Creedance Ferguson racing around the right side from 1-yard out.

Corbett (0-3) plays at No. 1-ranked Rainier (3-0) at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21.
