The Mt. Hood Community College women's basketball team challenged Umpqua, last year's Northwest runner-up, in the first half before falling 82-70 Friday at the Clackamas Thanksgiving tournament.
The Saints took their first lead on their first bucket of the game when Madison Allen sank a 3-pointer from the left side. They held the lead for all of three seconds when Umpqua answered with a fast-break layup at the other end.
Mt. Hood returned to the lead early in the second quarter when Courtney Jackson switched direction, stepped through a pair of defenders and reached the rim for a layup that capped a 13-point run.
Again, Umpqua answered in a flash.
The Saints found themselves within four points when center Rachel Watson converted her only basket of the game to start the second half.
The Riverhawks sprinted away from there, building a 70-49 lead by the end of the third quarter when Cielo Gonzalez drove the lane, went into the air and whipped a pass around a defender to find teammate Taylor Stricklin for a corner 3.
Stricklin knocked down five long balls and led all scorers with 23 points.
Mt. Hood takes on SW Oregon at Noon on Saturday and finishes the tournament at Noon on Sunday against Pierce College.
