Sheldon caught a glimpse of Barlow twice in the second half, but each time the Bruins were able to run away and hide on their way to a 73-63 win to start the 6A boys basketball playoffs Thursday night.

Barlow enjoyed a double-digit lead through most of the second half, but Sheldon closed to within four when Dawson Prickel and Aidan Wagers hit back-to-back 3-pointers in the final minute of the third quarter.

Barlow responded with Jesse White hitting a pull-up jumper, Inglesby connecting on a 3, and Dominic Jacoby swishing a shot from the baseline.

That trio combined to score all but three of the team's buckets.

Jaren Hunter drew a charge to force a Sheldon turnover on the defensive end, and the Bruins kept it rolling when Inglesby tip-toed the baseline before lunging back to the front side of the glass to finish a layup.

Four scores in four trips to start the fourth quarter, and Barlow found itself back in charge 61-50.

"They hit some big shots, but we just had to stay calm and play our game," Inglesby said.

Sheldon's 6-foot-9 center Dominic McGarvey converted a tip in at the front of the rim to bring the Irish within six points with 3:30 to play, but the Irish would get no closer.

Barlow coach Tom Johnson called a timeout, and the Bruins broke the huddle and executed an inbounds play from the scorer's table. Hunter, the Bruins' quarterback in football, looped a pass over the top of the defense to White, who was left with a wide path to the hoop for an easy two and a 10-point lead.

"We had gone three trips without a score, so getting that backdoor bucket was big for us," Johnson said.

Barlow went 8-for-12 (.667) at the free-throw line over the final two minutes, securing the victory when Inglesby and White combined to knock down five consecutive foul shots.

The Bruins advance to play a second-round game at No. 7 Tigard at 6 p.m. Saturday with the winner punching its ticket to next week's 6A tournament in the Chiles Center.

The teams traded the lead three times in the early stages of play with Sheldon looking to power the ball into the paint where posts McGarvey and Patrick Herbert combined to score 40 points.

"Their size caused us a lot of problems," Barlow coach Tom Johnson said. "We couldn't match up with them one-on-one, so we had to constantly help on 'D' and a lot of times the help was coming late."

Barlow's answer came in the form of 6-foot-even guard Noah Lowery.

"Noah took a couple charges in the first quarter and that made them more hesitant to send the ball inside," Johnson said.

PMG PHOTO: DAVID BALL - Barlows Joey Wolcott soars to the basket for a layup following a steal in the first half.

Joey Wolcott swiped a steal and went high above the hoop for a layup that put the Bruins up eight late in the first quarter.

White opened the second quarter by hitting a deep 3 over the top of a defender that prompted a 'You can't guard him,' chant from the Barlow Superfans.

Jacoby fired a bounce pass that found Inglesby cutting along the baseline for an uncontested bucket, and the net trip saw Jacoby attack the hoop himself using a soft touch off the glass for another two points.

Inglesby received a pass on the block, gave a quick pump fake and bent at the waist while a Sheldon defender flew over his back and fell on the floor 10 feet away. Inglesby was left all alone for an easy finish that sent the Bruins into the locker room up 40-29.

"They had the size advantage, so we had to get up and down the floor and get their big guys away from the basket," Inglesby said.

The Bruins kept it rolling into the third quarter with Jacoby slipping into the corner with enough time to slide his foot behind the arc and swish a 3. A few minutes later, Hunter came up with the assist of the night, threading a pin-point pass by two defenders to find Inglesby at the side of the rim.

Late in the third, Jacoby dribbled into the lane before sending a behind-the-back bounce pass to White for a layup to match Barlow's largest lead of the night at 12 points.
