MT. HOOD CC: An influx of freshman talent looks to lift Mt. Hood out of last place

PMG PHOTO - Samantha Brewster was a force in the front row for a Sandy High squad that made three consecutive state tournament appearances.

The Mt. Hood Community College volleyball team got off to a strong start by winning five of six matches at the Northwest Fall Festival to kick off the season last weekend. That included a pair of three-set wins over Columbia Basin and Big Bend. The Saints' most dominant victory came against the College of the Redwoods where they won 50 of 77 (64.9%) points.

Mt. Hood returns sophomore Lea'a Puleiala from Hawaii in the front row after ranking second on the team in kills (169) last season, while leading the team in aces (20).

Also joining the attack up front is rookie Samantha Brewster out of Sandy High, who helped the Pioneers to three consecutive trips to the state tournament.

Also bringing a local flavor to the squad is Barlow graduate Megan Jefferis in a defensive role, while Zoe Chatterton out of Corbett looks to make an impact at middle blocker.

Mt. Hood finished last in the South Region with a 1-13 record last season.

Saints head coach Kristina Crivello, out of Reynolds High, is in her second year at Mt. Hood and also coaches with the Portland Volleyball Club.

The South Region grows to nine teams this season with the addition of the first-year Rogue Ospreys out of Grants Pass.

The Mt. Hood trail runners are led by sophomore Christa Anderson out of Tennessee, who was a top 25 finisher at last year's Northwest championships. Hana Alvarez out of David Douglas also returns after filling the team's No. 3 spot last season, while the rest of this year's squad is new to college racing.

The men's team lists six runners, all rookies, including area graduates Nate Bishop and Trent Odman out of David Douglas along with Michael Ahl out of Gresham.

Fernando Fantroy returns to the program with a new co-coach Christine Eckstein, who was a member of a high school state championship team at Mountain View (2000). She went on to become an All-American runner at Clark and competed in four NAIA national championship meets, while at Eastern Oregon.

This story is slated for our Tuesday, Sept. 3, print edition.
