Barlow survives second-set scare for sweep

PORTLAND — Barlow's volleyball team survived a wild second set to score a sweep at David Douglas on Wednesday night.
After running away with the first set 25-11, it looked to be more of the same as the Bruins got out to a quick 8-2 lead in the second. Libero Emma Corvese came up with a run of four points, hitting three serves that the Scots could not get back over the net.
The Bruins expanded their lead to 15-7 after Grace Lam Tiang sent a winner down the line, and Samantha Pemberton knocked a serve that dived down in the middle of the Scots' court.
But David Douglas battled back with Alexis Tomey serving out a five-point surge, and the Scots would pull even at 15, shortly after Evelin Diaz banged a kill off a Barlow block.
The score would be tied six times down the stretch with David Douglas pushing ahead 22-21 after Alyssa Ashe converted a misdirection tip from the left side.
Barlow responded by winning four of the next five points to claim a two sets to none stranglehold on the match.
Lesi Sam subbed into the rotation and hit a pair of timely aces to bring up set point, and Barlow closed out the set with a perfect bump, set, kill combination from Emory Miller, Pemberton and Abbey Frame.
