David Douglas wins big in swim opener, Barlow boys basketball picks up its first win

DAVID DOUGLAS SWEEPS GOPHERS — The David Douglas boys swim team scored a 123-45 home win over Gresham, putting together 1-2 sweeps across six of the 11 events. Tuan Vuong picked up wins on each side of intermission, touching in first in the 50-yard freestyle in 23.60 seconds, followed by a win in the butterfly (1:01.18). Teammate Brayden Franzke won the 200 medley (2:12.33) and backstroke (58.85), while Daniel Wong finished first in the 500 free (5:32.07) and breaststroke (1:06.88). All three swimmers also swam legs on two winning relays.

Mason White touched the wall first in a photo-finish in the 200 free (2:05.56) to supply Gresham with its only win.

David Douglas also scored a 103-66 win over Hood River in a nonleague matchup.

On the girls side, the Scots finished with a 124-46 win over Gresham, also collecting six 1-2 finishes on the day. David Douglas gained a 26-point edge across the three tag-team races.

Hannah Walker won the butterfly (1:06.28) and backstroke (1:05.56), while teammate Julie Schwam doubled up in the 200 free (2:06.69) and 500 free (5:31.44). Marie Fesik led the Gophers with wins in the 200 medley (2:26.01) and 100 free (58.46).

David Douglas also scored an 117-53 win over Hood River in a nonleague dual.

BARLOW BOYS WIN TIGHT ONE — The Bruins scored an 84-82 win at Centennial in the Mount Hood Conference opener, producing the winning points when the tag-team of Jonathan Gutierrez-Venancio, C.J. Brushwood, Josiah Hoccum and Justin Logue won the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:45.45) by a full lap of the pool.

Logue won the backstroke (58.36) and 500 free (5:17.57). Centennial's Taz Larson won the 200 medley (2:08.51) and breaststroke (1:08.20) — his win in the latter giving the Eagles a two-point lead heading into the day's final race.

Barlow won the girls dual 129-34 with Megan Maroon doubling up in the 200 medley (2:26.26) and butterfly (1:04.41). Rookie Elle Moir led the Eagles with wins in the 50 free (25.52) and 100 free (57.81).

CENTRAL SWEEPS REYNOLDS — The Central Catholic boys scored a 101-63 win over Reynolds, outscoring the Raiders by 23 points across the freestyle events.

Picking up wins for the Raiders were Ben Klopp in the butterfly (1:03.79), Vu Lam in the 500 free (6:12.67) and Will Teyena in the breaststroke (1:25.07).

Central won the girls dual 115-38. Summer Fulton doubled up for the Raiders in the 200 free (2:45.15) and 100 free (1:14.47), while teammate Cecelia Reinhardt won the breaststroke (1:32.05).


Saturday, Dec. 14

FRANKLIN 64, REYNOLDS 41 — The host Lightning picked up a win in the consolation game of their host tournament after doubling up Reynolds 32-16 in the first half. Jovany Guzman led the Raiders with 11 points.

Friday, Dec. 13

BARLOW 68, SPRAGUE 51 — The Bruins picked up their first win, breaking the game open by outscoring Sprague 20-9 in the third quarter. Barlow's Jesse White finished with a game-high 24 points, while Evan Inglesby added 13.

OPEN DOOR 63, GRANDVIEW 20 — Ben Tevs scored a game-high 15 points to go along with 13 from Jason Kovalchuk, as the Huskies improved to 2-0 in the Valley 10.
