PORTLAND — The David Douglas boys swim team had little trouble keeping its unbeaten season on track with a convincing 120-43 win over perennial contender Central Catholic on Thursday.

The Scots put this one away early when Central failed to send anyone to the starting blocks in either of the first two individual races. That resulted in easy sweeps for David Douglas, which enjoyed a 36-4 lead through three events.

The Scots rolled through the entire dual, picking up first-place points across all 11 events.

Dawson Brummet pulled himself out of the water after winning the butterfly and immediately got back in line behind the starting blocks to dive in for a runner-up finish in the 100-yard freestyle a few minutes later.

"You have to get yourself psyched up for the race, dive into the water and just attack it," Brummet said. "It feels great today. We want to win the meet, but we also want to beat our own times."

The 200 freestyle relay was the most anticipated race of the day with the top teams from each school coming in a split-second apart on the season's best-times list.

David Douglas ended the suspense early when Kenny Nguyen dived in for the second leg of the race and opened up a lead that was half the length of the pool.

"I jump in with my head going straight to the bottom, I don't breathe at all and it's all fast kick," Nguyen said. "I take really long strokes, and I could feel the gap increasing."

The Scots swept three races on the day and got double wins from Brayden Franzke in the distance free and backstroke, and from Tuan Vuong in the sprint freestyle races.

Other Douglas wins came from Daniel Wong in the 200 medley, Zach Franzke in the breaststroke and Nguyen in the 200 free.

David Douglas looks to finish off its unbeaten run through league with a dual at third-place Barlow on Thursday.
