Corbett boys win big to start second cycle
4A BOYS BASKETBALL
|Madras White Buffaloes|
The Corbett boys basketball team kept its playoff hopes alive with a dominating 54-33 home win over Madras to start the second cycle of the Tri-Valley Conference schedule Friday night.
The Cardinals took charge early when Nolan Han dived to the floor to complete a steal, pushing the ball ahead to teammate Joe Fundak, who dribbled past half-court and put on a spin move at the arc to find his way to the hoop for a 19-11 lead.
Moments later, Fundak drove the lane again. This time drawing a pair of defenders before leaving the ball off for center Mason Wright to finish at the front of the rim.
Fundak kept finding his way to the basket, this time splitting two defenders on the perimeter and crossing through traffic in the lane before coming out the other side and putting a shot off the glass for a 27-14 lead.
Madras came out in a full-court press that caused trouble in the second half, but cold shooting by the White Buffaloes prevented them making a dent in the lead.
In fact, Corbett guard Luke Finn slashed to the basket on back-to-back possessions to grow the Cardinals lead to 15 points heading into the fourth quarter.
Corbett put the game out of reach 42-26 when Fundak, Finn and Lane Fort broke the press with a series of criss-cross passes. The possession ended with Fondak getting the ball back on the edge of the court, driving the baseline and finding Wright across the lane for an easy two.
Corbett (8-10) pulled to within a game of Madras for a spot in the top half of the Tri-Valley with two weeks left in the regular season.
