Barlow girls water polo wins 2021 State Championship
Barlow girls water polo hoisted a trophy last weekend as the team ran through the playoff bracket to claim a state championship.
The No. 1 Bruins defeated Mountainside/Aloha 16-10 after pulling away from a tough contest Saturday evening, Nov. 13, to win the 2021 OSAA 6A State Water Polo Championships.
Barlow jumped out to an early 4-2 lead at the end of the first quarter, and continued to battle back and forth during the championship match at the Osborne Aquatic Center in Corvallis. But late in the first half, the Bruins made their mark on the game, going on a scoring frenzy to pull ahead 7-3 at the break.
Mountainside continued to fight, outscoring the Bruins in the third quarter, but Barlow made another late surge to win the game and tournament.
Barlow shined as the top seed throughout the tournament, dominating the early rounds. The Bruins bested Summit 23-6 in the opener, followed by another smooth 22-9 win over Lake Oswego.
In the semifinals the Bruins beat a tough South Eugene 15-10, before eventually topping Mountainside/Aloha to hoist the trophy and celebrate as a team.
Bruins boys finish third
It was a good weekend to be a fan of Barlow water polo, as the boys placed third in the 6A State Championships.
The Bruins boys beat South Eugene 23-13 Saturday afternoon, Nov. 13, in the third-fourth place match. After the result the boys stuck around the aquatic center to cheer on and celebrate the girls' state championship victory.
