Bruins sweep competition at MHC-hosted weekend; Barlow boys take second in close loss to state champs

Barlow water polo had plenty of reason to celebrate last weekend as both the girls and boys came away with well-deserved medals during a Bruins-hosted early-season tournament.

Featuring some of the top programs across the state, the tournament was held Friday and Saturday, Sept. 9-10, at the Mt. Hood Community College pool, 2545 N.E. 17th St. And though the schedule was shortened due to smoky conditions plaguing the outdoor venue, both the Bruins squads earned berths to the championship bouts.

The Barlow girls, who are coming off an undefeated 2021 season capped with a state championship, continued their jaw-dropping run of play. They won all four of their group-stage matches by a goal differential of 63-10. The most goals scored against the Bruins came via Lake Oswego with 4. The final match had the Bruins cruise to a 15-2 win over second-place Hillsboro.

Meanwhile, the Bruin boys continued to duel against powerhouse Lake Oswego, who won the state title last season. A few days before the tournament, Barlow dropped a close contest to the Lakers by a single goal, and they continued to show well against the preseason favorites.

Through group play, the Barlow boys also went 4-0, including a tightly contested 11-5 victory over Tualatin on day one. As a team they outscored opponents 57-17 through those opening matches. Then in the championship they fought hard against Lake Oswego, coming up short 9-5.

The tournament was marred by poor air quality over the weekend, which affected conditions with it being held outdoors. Several teams dropped out after early losses, thus some late games were canceled as were the third-place and fifth-place bouts.
