A standing ovation for essential workers
As many do their part to stem the spreading tide of COVID-19 by staying indoors and social distancing, others continue to work to ensure the safety and wellbeing of their neighbors.
Healthcare professionals, grocery store employees, pharmacists, first responders and others, are still going into work every day to uplift others. Which is why a Gresham resident is hosting a small sign of appreciation Wednesday evening, March 25.
Ricki Ruiz, a city of Gresham employee and candidate for Oregon House District 50, which encompasses large portions of Gresham, put together the "Clapping Ovation for Healthcare Workers and First Responders."
At 7 p.m., community members are encouraged to go out onto their balconies, open their windows, and applaud in a show of gratitude to those fighting against the novel coronavirus. The plan is to have the ovation go on for 5 minutes.
"My goal is for us as a community to come together and simply applaud in appreciation of our workers," Ruiz said.
The idea came from Spain and other European countries, which have coordinated similar gestures for their first responders. The hope is to have everyone join in across Gresham, Troutdale, Wood Village, Fairview and Portland.
