According to Reach Out and Read,

80% oa a child's brain is formed during the first three years

of their life. Adventist Health has partnered with Reach Out and

Read, a national program that incorporates books into pediatric

care to encourage families to read together.

Dr. Lila Nussair, MD, says "Reading with your child is not only fun, but also provides language and speech development at the most formative time in their lives."

Here are a few tips from the team at Reach Out and Read to help you read with your child every day.

Start at an early age reading aloud every day!

Babies love being held and hearing your voice so cuddle up together and look at board books.

Set aside a few minutes each day.

Young children may not like tosit still, but they will listen and sit

longer if they are having fun.

Let your child turn the pages:

Infants and toddlers need your help to turn pages. Three-year-old children enjoy turning paper pages without help.

Reread favorite stories:

Children love to hear the same stories again because it is how they learn.

Ask your child about the story:

What do you see? What do you think? Give your child time to

answer and praise them.

Make the story lively by reading with fun and excitement in your

voice.

Try loud, soft, or silly sounds. Use stuffed animals and other toys to tell the story.

Talk about the pictures:

Makeup stories to go with the images. Let your child join in!

Read anywhere, anytime:

Read at playtime, bedtime and naptime. Read any place you have to wait. Read at the playground or under a tree, in the car or on the bus. Create a cozy reading spot at

home.
