Music speaks to us. It can alter our moods, invoke memories and make us want to sing along. At River Terrace we provide many opportunities for our residents to enjoy music with entertainers, sing-alongs or just having the stereo play their favorite songs in the background. Residents love the music, but it isn't personal to them.

Studies have shown that music can improve communication, mobility and improve mood among other benefits. For some people listening and playing music help regain a measure of speech. For the residents of the Beehive, even the smallest improvement in these areas can have an impact on their quality of life. Caring Places created a program called "Brain Music" to use music to ease the effects of many cognitive and physical impairments for our residents. Triggering emotion and memory, music can speak to our residents like nothing else. When a person is listening, their rhythmic responses are tied to the motor center of the brain; this requires little or no cognitive or mental processing. Residents who participate in "Brain Music" often show immediate, clear and beneficial results.

Music is especially helpful in the treatment of dementia, "Brain Music" allows the resident's family select music playlists personalized to each resident. A song request form is filled out, our team then creates the playlist and provides a personalized iPod for our residents.

If you are interested in your loved one participating in the "Brain Music" program, please contact the staff at the Beehive.
