City officials aren’t talking, but the smart money says a “major announcement” regarding the future of the Hillsboro Ballpark — expected Tuesday afternoon, May 13 — has to do with a naming-rights sponsorship for the 4,500-capacity multipurpose facility at the Gordon Faber Recreation Complex.

Hillsboro Ballpark, located at 4450 N.W. 229th Ave., is the home of the Hillsboro Hops, the Class A baseball team affiliated with the Arizona Diamondbacks of Major League Baseball.

The city has been pursuing a major sponsor, for whom the ballpark would be named, since the park opened in 2013.

City spokesman Patrick Preston and Hillsboro Parks & Recreation spokeswoman Mary Loftin issued a joint press release May 7 saying Mayor Jerry Willey, Hillsboro Hops General Manager K.L. Wombacher and “a special guest” would meet with members of the media next Tuesday at the ballpark to break the news.

“We have a major announcement, and you’ll find out on Tuesday,” was all Loftin would say when contacted just before the Hillsboro Tribune’s press deadline.

In addition to the ballpark, the complex, operated by the city’s parks department, also features a 7,000-seat stadium and six softball fields.
