Murder victim identified as South Carolina native

Courtesy Photo: KOIN News 6A murderer was on the loose in Hillsboro Sunday, armed and potentially dangerous, and by Wednesday morning had still not been captured.

At around 2:20 a.m. Sept. 13 the suspect — described as a Hispanic male in his early 20s wearing a black shirt — fired six rounds from a handgun at Southeast Baseline Street near Southeast 11th Avenue, said Lt. Mike Rouches, spokesman for HPD.

The rounds struck another man, who died at the scene.

The responding officer found a male victim “down in the middle of Baseline” in front of Hillsboro Plaza, said Rouches. “He died right there in the street.”

Hillsboro Plaza, located at 1075 S.E. Baseline St., is adjacent to the police department, located at 250 S.E. 10th Ave.

On Wednesday, Hillsboro police detectives identified the murder victim as Alonzo Sentel Gregg, 34, a South Carolina native who had been staying in Washington and Multnomah counties.

A motive for the crime had not been established before this week’s Hillsboro Tribune press deadline. The investigation by HPD detectives and the Washington County Major Crimes Team continued this week.

Rouches noted Sunday it was likely the suspect and the victim knew each other. After the shooting, the suspect fled north on Baseline on foot.

A K-9 unit was dispatched, but found no trail.

Law enforcement officers are asking for any help the community can offer.
