Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici is once again challenging students in Oregon’s First Congressional District to step up to the challenge — the annual Congressional App Challenge.

High school students in Oregon’s First Congressional District are invited to compete. District 1 includes Washington, Yamhill, Clatsop and Columbia counties as well as part of Multnomah County.

Established by members of the U.S. House of Representatives, the contest is a nationwide event designed to encourage high school students to express their creativity while participating in science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM).

Students are asked to create and demonstrate a software application, or “app,” for mobile, tablet or computer devices.

The app’s source code must be submitted online before Jan. 15, 2016, and competitors must provide a video demonstration explaining their app and what they learned through the competition process.

Winners will be announced on Feb. 15.

A panel of local experts will review the submissions. Winners from each congressional district will be acknowledged in a district awards ceremony and featured on the website. A display in the U.S. Capitol Building will honor all of the district winners.

More information on the competition, including how to register is available at under the “Serving You” tab.
