Three candidates for Oregon Secretary of State – considered one of the state's few competitive races for this May’s primaries – will answer voters’ questions during the Democratic Party of Washington County’s SpringFest brunch on March 19.

Candidates in the Democratic primary are:

• Brad Avakian of Beaverton, a former lawmaker in both chambers of the state legislature and currently serving as the state’s Bureau of Labor and Industries commissioner.

• Richard Devlin of Tualatin, whose service in both chambers of the state legislature spans 20 years and currently represents Senate District 19. He is a former Senate Majority Leader.

• Val Hoyle of Eugene, a state representative and current House of Representatives Majority Leader who serves West Eugene and Junction City in Lane County.

The winner on May 17 becomes the Democratic Party’s nominee for the November ballot.

SpringFest 2016 will begin at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 19, at the Hillsboro Community Senior Center, 750 S.E. Eighth Ave., Hillsboro.

The event includes a large brunch menu and a question-and-answer period with the candidates.

Tickets are $45 for adults, except $40 for seniors, veterans, volunteers and precinct committee persons.
