Federal judge in California blocks Trump order on 'sanctuary city' funding
A federal judge in California today blocked a Trump administration order to withhold funding from communities that limit cooperation with U.S. immigration authorities, saying the president has no authority to attach new conditions to federal spending.
U.S. District Judge William Orrick issued the temporary ruling in a lawsuit against the executive order targeting so-called sanctuary cities.
While the term has no legal status, Beaverton, Hillsboro and Portland have declared themselves to be "sanctuary cities." The district court ruling affects only those California cities, and not Oregon cities. However, if the White House challenges Judge Orrick's ruling, the case could find itself in the 9th Circuit Court; Oregon falls within the 9th Circuit.
