The window to file for city council positions across Washington County opens July 9.

                    Ever thought about running for public office? The filing period to file for local city councils opens early next month.

Starting Monday, July 9, candidates across Washington County are eligible to formally file for city councils in Hillsboro, Forest Grove, Cornelius, North Plains, Gaston and Banks.

Across the five cities, a total of 13 council positions are up for grabs, as well as the seats of four sitting mayors.

Voters in Hillsboro will elect three city councilors, with at least one guaranteed new face next year. Council President Darrell Lumaco is term limited and unable to seek re-election for a third term. Hillsboro resident Beach Pace has announced her intention to run for the seat.

Hillsboro councilors Olivia Alcaire and Kyle Allen have said they plan to run for re-election. Alcaire was appointed to the city council in 2017. Allen was elected to his first term in 2014.

In Hillsboro, candidates are elected by geographic district. A map of each of the city's three wards is available online at

In Forest Grove, Mayor Pete Truax, Council President Tom Johnston and councilors Ron Thompson, Malynda Wenzl are up for re-election. Truax and Wenzl have both announced they plan to seek re-election. Forest Grove resident Devon Downeysmith has also said she plans to seek a seat on the council.

In North Plains, councilors Sherrie Simmons, Larry Gonzales and Garth Eimers are up for re-election, as is Banks Mayor Dan Keller and councilors Mark Walsh, Mark Gregg and Pete Edison.

In Cornelius, Mayor Jef Dalin and councilors Harley Crowder and Jose Orozco are up for re-election, and in Gaston, Mayor Tony Hall as well as Jerry Spaulding in Pos. 4, Rodney Hale in Pos. 5 and Jon Wismer in Pos. 6 will see their current terms expire at the end of the year.
