Thanksgiving tradition gives kids the change to run, race before 'Turkey Day.'

On your mark, get set, go!

Hillsboro's 23rd annual Youth Turkey Trot returns to Hare Field on Tuesday, Nov. 20, offering area kids from pre-kindergarten to eighth grade the change to get out and stretch their legs for an afternoon of friendly competition.

Each year, the free "fun run" brings more than 300 kids and their families together to celebrate Thanksgiving with races aimed at getting kids moving, before they stuff themselves with a holiday meal.

First, second and third place winners will take home a pie or small prize. All participants will bring home a participation ribbon.

Registration on-site begins at 3 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 20.

The youngest racers, in pre-kindergarten, will kick off the event with a race of a half-lap at 4 p.m. Races continue by age group.

Kindergarteners will race for 3/4 of a lap, while first graders will complete a full lap. The length of the races increase with each grade level. Seventh and eighth graders must complete four laps of the track.

Hare Field is located at 1151 N.E. Grant St., in Hillsboro.
