The Hillsboro School District kicks off its free summer lunch program this week. Children ages one to 18 can access a free meal with the Sack Lunch Program from Monday to Friday until Friday, Aug. 16. Not only are there sites in Hillsboro, but the program has introduced two new locations in Cornelius at Alpine Park and Dogwood Park.
Food and activities will be provided through "The Outpost," a Hillsboro Parks and Recreation Department program that aims to give kids a place to go in the summer. In the past, hundreds of children participated each day.
• Alpine Park, Cornelius
• Bagley Park, Cornelius
• Dogwood Park, Cornelius
• Turner Creek Park
• McKinney Park
• Reedville Elementary
• Shadywood Park
• Shute Park
• Walnut Street Park
Shute Park, 750 S.E. 8th Ave.; Shadywood Park, 535 N.E. 24th Ave.; and McKinney Park, 375 N.W. Dennis Ave. are the participating locations with activities for "The Outpost."
Each day at those locations there will be a different theme. Mondays are "Bubbles," Tuesdays are "Skookum Teebee (honored feather) Reading Powwow," Wednesdays are "Water Play," Thursdays are "Board Games" and Fridays are "Bear Hunt Mornings."
The fun doesn't stop there — each week is also themed around National Parks, with different parks like Buck Island Reef and Canyon de Chelly National Monument naming the nine weeks of the program.
Activities run from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., with free lunch served from noon to 12:30 p.m. After the meal, more "Outpost" activities continue.
