Geoffrey Germano taught in Beaverton School District before being caught downloading child pornography videos

A former Aloha High School teacher was convicted last week on charges related to child pornography.

Geoffrey William Germano, of Hillsboro, was found guilty on July 31 of of seven counts of encouraging child sex abuse by Washington County Judge Charles Bailey.

WCSO PHOTO - GermanoAn investigation into Germano began in April 2018, when detectives with the Washington County Sheriff's Office got an alert that an IP address was flagged for having downloaded or shraed a "high number of known child pornography files through peer-to-peer file sharing networks," according to the Washington County District Attorney's Office. He was arrested in October 2018.

Investigators say Germano had installed a file sharing software on a computer that he used on several internet networks, one of which was associated with the Beaverton School District. During a search of his home in Hillsboro, Germano admitted to bringing his laptop to school, but claimed he didn't knowlingly use the school's WiFi signal to download porn, the D.A.'s Office noted.

At the time of the discovery, Germano was a teacher at Aloha High School in the Beaverton School District. Records show he is licensed to teach special education and his Oregon teaching license is still active until 2022.

The search of his home and a forensic search of his computer revelaed various videos depicting child pornography, according to prosecutors.

Furthermore, Germano admitted to downloading the material and later deleting the videos.

"Evidence discovered during the search suggested that Germano downloaded significantly more child pornography files than investigators were able to recover during their analysis," the Washington County D.A.'s Office noted in a news release.

Investigators say the downloads likely started around March 2016.

Germano is scheduled to appear in court again on Aug. 22 for a sentencing hearing.

Other teachers sentenced for having child porn

Germano isn't the only teacher to be charged with possessing child porn. The week prior to the court conviction, a former Portland high school teacher, Phillip Lancaster, was sentenced to prison for encouraging child sex abuse after investigators found child pornography on the teacher's phone. Lancaster had been reported for inappropriate behavior involving a student on campus in a bathroom years prior, but wasn't investigated until 2018. Earlier in July, a former Portland State University professor was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for charges related to possessing child pornography.
