The Infiniti sedan struck a tree near the intersection of Brookwood Parkway and Airport Road late Saturday.

COURTESY PHOTO: HILLSBORO POLICE DEPARTMENT - The driver and passenger in this car were critically injured after the driver lost control of the vehicle and hit a tree near the Hillsboro Airport late Saturday night, Aug. 10, according to the Hillsboro Police Department. Both the driver and an adult passenger were critically injured when their car slammed into a tree off Northeast Brookwood Parkway near Airport Road in Hillsboro, the Hillsboro Police Department said Saturday night, Aug. 10.

The crash is believed to have occurred at about 10 p.m. Saturday. Only one vehicle was involved, an Infiniti sedan.

An investigation is ongoing, but it appears likely the car was traveling faster than the posted speed limit of 45 mph on Brookwood Parkway when the driver lost control and struck the tree, said Hillsboro Police Sgt. Clint Chrz.

A photo from the scene shows the car's passenger side virtually shredded from the collision, wrapped partway around the tree trunk.

The car's two occupants were transported to area hospitals, both in critical condition, Chrz said.

The driver, a man believed to be in his 20s, was taken by ground ambulance, while the passenger, a woman of similar age to the driver, was medically evacuated by helicopter.

It is unclear whether intoxication was a factor in the crash.

Following the wreck, Brookwood Parkway was closed between Northeast Cornell and Shute roads for a crash investigation. Motorists are advised to avoid the area Saturday night into early Sunday morning.
