UPDATE: Westbound Highway 26 open after crash
Westbound Highway 26 is back open near Northwest Helvetia Road after a deadly crash left the road closed for most of the day.
Authorities say five vehicles, including a semi-truck, crashed on Thursday morning, Aug. 15, killing one person.
The crash occurred around 10 a.m., just west of the Helvetia Road/Brookwood Parkway overpass. According to the Washington County Sheriff's Office. Authorities say one person was killed in the crash and another was injured. Sgt. Danny DiPietro, a spokesman with the Sheriff's Office, said the highway would be closed for the next two to three hours.
It's not yet known what caused the crash, DiPietro said, but one the vehicles involved, an SUV, rolled onto its top in the middle of the westbound lanes, and a semi-truck jackknifed into a barricade.
Drivers are asked to avoid the area, and this story will be updated with more information as it is released.
