Patricia Clayton allegedly struck and killed a Beaverton woman with her car on Jan. 19 in Hillsboro.

Patricia ClaytonA 77-year-old North Plains woman is facing criminal charges in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash earlier this year, the Hillsboro Police Department announced Thursday afternoon, Sept. 5.

Patricia Clayton was identified as the driver in the Jan. 19 crash at the intersection of Northeast Cornell Road and 17th Avenue, just west of the Hillsboro Airport, police said.

Clayton allegedly struck two pedestrians while driving a van: Marjorie Averill and Timothy Mahan. Averill, a 38-year-old Beaverton resident, was fatally injured and died at the scene. Mahan, a 47-year-old Portland resident, was hurt but his injuries were not life-threatening.

Mahan later told KOIN 6 News, the News-Times' media partner, that he and Averill had been on their first date after meeting online. They were crossing Northeast 17th Avenue at a crosswalk when the van collided with them, striking Mahan first, he said.

"If they could have stopped once they hit me ... I would have had my little injuries, and (Averill) would have been fine," Mahan told KOIN 6 News. "Everything would have been fine. They chose to speed up."

The van sped eastbound on Cornell Road after the collision. Police were unable to locate it until the following morning. At the time, no arrests were made.

However, after Clayton was indicted by a Washington County grand jury, Hillsboro police and Washington County sheriff's deputies arrested her Thursday on two counts of failure to perform the duties of a driver involved in an injury crash.

Clayton was lodged at the Washington County Jail.

Editor's note: This story has been updated to clarify that the suspect vehicle was eventually located by investigators on Jan. 20.
