A business in downtown Hillsboro is taking a new approach to healing.
Located in a small studio above Insomnia Coffee, on 315 E. Main St. #202, Illuminating Wellness sells healing crystals, essential oils and handmade jewelry. A partition divides the room to offer customers Reiki sessions on a massage table.
The sessions include a healing technique to channel energy into a person through touch.
"Crystals hold an energy to them, and that energy resonates with energies inside of your body," said Jennifer Harrison, who owns Illuminating Wellness. "You can use crystals, gems or stones for healing different physical, emotional, spiritual aspects of your body."
Harrison was first curious about energetic wellness after attending acupuncture sessions. The business owner remembers having select visions, which grew into a passion for using energy and energetic medicines.
"The work that I do helps to raise you up, clear out the stuff that doesn't belong to you anymore, and helps you have that clear path of where you're supposed to go and how you're going to get there," she said.
Illuminating Wellness opened last December, but Harrison first got the idea three years ago. She's excited to help customers who come in for stress reduction or physical pain.
"A friend came in with a broken wrist, and we did some crystal light therapy to help with reducing inflammation," Harrison said. "She said that the device felt like an MRI machine and could feel it pulsate … and that the inflammation went down noticeably."
Harrison also offers biofeedback treatment, which is a device that takes a person's "energetic signatures" with bands that wrap around a person's wrist, ankles and head. Customers can sign up for the treatment and pay Harrison through a donation.
The business owner can't take monetary compensation until she earns 500 practice hours on the device, she said.
"(The machine) reads different energetic signatures from you," Harrison said. "It runs those against 10,000 different energetic signatures that have been put into the software program. … I can look at that and work on specific symptoms, areas (and) illnesses."
She added that within a couple of weeks, people have told her about making big life decisions after using the biofeedback machine.
When I asked Harrison about others who may be skeptical about using an energetic approach to health, she said: "They need to follow their heart. If they don't feel that this is something that they're willing to try, then they should wait until they're ready to. No one should ever be forced or coerced into trying something that they're not ready for.
Outside of the shop, Harrison has worked as a nurse for the past 18 years. She's excited to help others outside of conventional medicine.
"(Western medicine) is like a Band-Aid," she said. "You put it in. It wears off."
Harrison added that conventional medicine also can have serious side effects, unlike energetic healing.
"When you're working on an energetic level, you don't have something that you put in and it wears off in four hours or 12 hours," Harrison said. "You're working to make some changes on that subconscious level that will then shift within your body."
Illuminating Wellness is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. most Saturdays. Customers can schedule appointments for private shopping during the week.
