Sgt. Jeremy Braun returns 18 months after being shot on the job near Henry Hagg Lake.

COURTESY PHOTO - Sgt. Jeremy Braun returned to full-duty more than 18 months after being shot during a call near Hagg Lake in Gaston.Sgt. Jeremy Braun of the Washington County Sheriff's Office returned to full duty Monday, Feb. 22, 18 months removed from being shot by an armed suspect near Hagg Lake.

Braun, along with Deputy Chris Iverson, were shot during a shootout, which ensued after a homeowner in the 54700 block of Southwest Scoggins Valley Road in Gaston reported a man wearing camouflage clothing stole guns from his property.

Braun was working as part of the Tactical Negotiations Team tracking the suspect in a heavily wooded area when he and his team were ambushed.

Iverson was treated and released that night. Braun, however, suffered wounds to the neck and upper body and was airlifted with serious injuries that required a lengthy hospital stay and grueling rehab, requiring training to both walk and talk again.

Braun has since been promoted to Sergeant. In the year and a half since the shooting, Braun was promoted from corporal to sergeant and has overcome incredible odds to be back working a full schedule.

Upon his return, the sergeant was pleased to be back, albeit understandably anxious after such a serious and lengthy ordeal.

"It's like falling off a bike," Braun said in a statement. "You forget, but you know how to do it. I'm very happy to be back, but kind of nervous at the same time."

Braun will be spending the next several weeks working with other patrol sergeants, learning the ropes of his new position. He is based out of the Sheriff's Office headquarters in Hillsboro.

The suspect in the Hagg Lake shooting, Dante James Halling, was also shot and injured by return fire from law enforcement officers at the scene. He was subsequently arrested.

Halling is set to be tried on charges that include attempted murder, assault, unlawful use of a weapon, burglary and theft in April.

Editor's note: This story has been updated with more information about the suspect in the 2019 shooting. An earlier version of this story misstated Jeremy Braun's title in the headline. He is a sergeant with the Washington County Sheriff's Office. The headline has been corrected.
