What can be done with the polystyrene blocks that many holiday gifts will arrive packaged in? It's especially hard now that polystyrene — sometimes called "Styrofoam" — is no longer accepted by Far West Recycling.

Westside Recyclers will host PlanetCon 2018, a recycling and holiday decor swap event on Saturday, Jan. 6.

Bring your polystyrene packaging, stretchy plastic bags and Christmas light strands that no longer work to be recycled. The event takes place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lincoln Street Elemetary School, 801 N.E. Lincoln St., in Hillsboro.

Swap holiday décor, learn about recycling, local "Repair Fairs," "Shake & Fold," "Eat Smart, Waste Less," the "Bring Your Own Cup" campaign, how to compost with worm bins and more.

Donations of clean, used or new warm winter coats, mittens and scarves in good condition (working zippers, etc.) and new warm socks will be given to the Family Promise of Beaverton assistance program.
