Concert to benefit student work-study trip to Peru
A Glencoe High School graduate and a retired Hillsboro School District music teacher will team up Friday, Jan. 12, for a concert and activities at Hillsboro United Church of Christ.
The evening will include a short concert by Emily Upton, including musical theater pieces and Spanish folk songs. Upton is currently a student at Wagner College in New York City, where she recently played Abigail Adams in "1776." Closer to home, Upton appeared in many Glencoe High productions, including as Dorothy in "The Wizard of Oz" and as Sally in "Charlie Brown." She was also in Bag&Baggage's production of "The Crucible" and Broadway Rose's "West Side Story."
She will be accompanied by Kevin Upton.
Following the concert, the community is invited to join in singing, games and dances led by Cindy Uecker, a retired music teacher and experienced international folk dance teacher.
The event begins at 7 p.m. in the Hillsboro UCC sanctuary, 494 E. Main St. The event is free and donations are encouraged.
Donations will go to help fund Upton's work-study trip to Trujillo, Peru, to work in several communities that partner with MOCHE, Inc., a non-governmental organization with a long term commitment in the Moche Valley area of Peru.
As part of the exploring the impacts of environmental pollutants on rural health in the Middle Moche Valley, Peru, work-study students carry out basic water quality, ambient and indoor air quality testing in select households, leading to a contextualized awareness about pollutants as well as promoting culturally sensitive remedial measures aimed to improve quality of life in the communities.
