Since 1937, the Bald Peak Easter sunrise service, sponsored by local churches, has been held at the Bald Peak State scenic area. The park is in the Chehalem Mountains and ranges from Hillsboro to Newberg.

Laurel Community Church and Scholls Community Church in Hillsboro will instead have a pre-recorded Easter service for community members to enjoy.

The goal is for others to celebrate Easter while social distancing during the COVID-19 crisis.

"Our two churches, plus a missionary organization Eteam Global, organized this at a neighbor's house who lives in the Bald Peak area," said Charles Felton with the Laurel Community Church. "While filming this … we also had a drone going. We will have it all together and available for Easter Sunday morning."

Initially, organizers decided to cancel the service on March 22 after learning the park would be closed.

Felton said it was important to continue the tradition even if it was virtually. It took organizers two weeks to put all the elements together for one recording.

"We're just thankful to continue this tradition of celebrating," said Felton. "We met three times over Zoom to put this thing together."

The service includes a heritage introduction by Felton and Lon Seidel, prayers by pastor Mark Campbell and Dr. Steve Stanley, music by Dawna Stutzman and Dan and Georgene Rice and a message by Eteam evangelist and former Oregon State Football player Austin Hall.

The recorded service will be available at 7 a.m. on Sunday, March 12. For more information, visit eteamglobal.online.church.
