City Manager Rob Drake said the Cornelius Youth Advisory Council organized the event to promote the city through citywide public art while being conscious of the coronavirus pandemic.

"Residents will get a chance to draw on their sidewalks with chalk and tell the story of what Cornelius looks like to them," Drake said. "They can use more than one panel of concrete to tell their story of Cornelius. If they want, driveways can also be utilized."

Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 8, people can pick up a drawing kit and register at Cornelius City Hall between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. through Friday, Sept. 11.

The city will provide a location for participants to send photos of their drawings until 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12.

Later on Saturday afternoon, Mayor Jef Dalin will announce two winners and the Youth Advisory Council will announce two winners to receive gift certificates, which will be mailed out the next week.

The free drawing kits provided by the city will include colored chalk, two battery-powered votive candles and bags to highlight the homeowners' participation, a real estate-sized sign and wire stake to promote the contest, and a rules/information sheet.
