SUNDAY, AUG. 22

Pro baseball

Mariners 6, Astros 3, 11 innings — After being outscored 27-4 in the first two games of the series and then trailing 2-0 entering the eighth inning Sunday, the Mariners came up in the clutch.

The Mariners trailed 2-0 as Houston starter Framber Valdez allowed three hits in seven innings.

Doubles by Jake Bauers and J.P. Crawford off former Seattle closer Kendall Graveman plated a run in the eighth inning. Then, Ty France tied it 2-2 with a ninth-inning homer off Ryan Pressly.

In the bottom of the 10th inning, the Astros loaded the bases off reliever Paul Sewald. But, Sewald then struck out the next three hitters.

France's RBI single gave Seattle a 3-2 lead in the top of the 11th inning, and then Kyle Seager hit a three-run homer. Houston scored a run in the bottom of the inning before the Mariners closed it out.

Seattle (67-58) moves on to play two games at Oakland.

SATURDAY, AUG. 21

Pro baseball

Astros 15, Mariners 1 — Houston erupted for hits and runs against another good Seattle pitcher, Logan Gilbert, in the home win.

The Astros, who had 15 hits Saturday, have outscored the Mariners 27-4 in the first two games of the three-game series.

Like Yusei Kikuchi the day before, Gilbert had trouble getting hitters out. He gave up eight hits and nine runs in 4 2/3 innings, leaving the game during a six-run Houston fifth inning.

Taylor Jones went 3-for-4, including a solo homer off Gilbert, with four RBIs and three runs scored for Houston. Yordan Alvarez hit a three-run homer off Gilbert. Jose Altuve had four hits and three runs scored.

Mitch Haniger homered for Seattle.

Canadians 4, Dust Devils 3 — Vancouver scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning — on Spencer Hortwitz's three-run homer — and held on to beat Tri-City at Ron Tonkin Field. Adam Kloffenstein allowed three hits and three runs while striking out seven in six innings, and three relievers held the Dust Devils scoreless.

Indians 8, Hops 7, 10 innings — Host Spokane plated two runs in the bottom of the 10th inning to beat Hillsboro. Tristin English had given the Hops a 7-6 lead in the top of the inning with an RBI single.

English went 3-for-5, including a two-run homer, three RBIs and two runs scored for Hillsboro. Blaze Alexander hit a three-run homer. And, Cam Coursey homered in the top of the ninth inning, briefly giving Hillsboro a 6-5 lead, but Spokane's Brenton Doyle tied it with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning.

FRIDAY, AUG. 20

Pro baseball

Astros 12, Mariners 3 — Houston scored all their runs in the first five innings in the home rout of Seattle.

Yusei Kikuchi gave up seven hits and seven runs in 2 2/3 innings. Jake Meyers and Yordan Alvarez hit two-run homers and Yuli Gurriel and Martin Maldonado solo shots for Houston.

Ty France and Kyle Seager hit solo homers for Seattle.

Indians 11, Hops 3 — Host Spokane had 15 hits to power the win over Hillsboro.

But, the Hops' Andy Yerzy continued his hot streak with another homer, his fourth in the past three games.

Canadians 5, Dust Devils 2 — Spencer Horwitz homered as Vancouver beat Tri-City at Ron Tonkin Field.

West Coast League

Corvallis won its fifth consecutive title in the collegiate wood-bat West Coast League, which includes the Portland Pickles. The Knights beat Yakima Valley 13-2 Friday to win the series and championship.

THURSDAY, AUG. 19

Pro baseball

Mariners 9, Rangers 8, 11 innings — Seattle blew a 7-2 ninth-inning lead, but Ty France's 11th-inning two-run homer powered the win at Texas.

Seattle swept the three-game series and enters the Houston series at a season-high 10 games over .500 (66-56).

Jason Martin's three-run homer off closer Diego Castillo capped a five-run ninth inning by Texas.

Mitch Haniger hit a three-run homer and scored three runs. France went 3-for-6 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Indians 4, Hops 3 — Javier Guevara's RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning provided the winning run in Spokane's home win against Hillsboro.

Andy Yerzy, who had homered Wednesday, hit two more homers Thursday and drove in three runs for Hillsboro.

Canadians 9, Dust Devils 4 — Kenyon Yovan, the former Westview High and UO star, homered again (his fourth) for Tri-City.

But, Vancouver won at Ron Tonkin Field, as Luis De Los Santos hit a three-run homer and Will Robertson and Davis Schneider solo shots. Eight of nine hitters had hits.

WEDNESDAY, AUG. 18

Pro baseball

Mariners 3, Rangers 1 — Another left-handed pitcher led Seattle to a win against host Texas by the same score as Tuesday's game.

A day after Tyler Anderson's solid start, Marco Gonzales allowed six hits and no runs while striking out three and walking one in 5 1/3 innings, and got help from five relievers.

Kyle Seager's first-inning two-run homer gave the Seattle pitchers all the runs they needed.

The Mariners, who have won seven of the past nine games, go for the three-game sweep Thursday.

Indians 6, Hops 1 — At Spokane, Hillsboro managed only five hits. Andy Yerzy hit a solo homer.

After two scoreless innings by Peter Lambert, Chris McMahon allowed four hits and one run while striking out eight and walking one in seven innings for Spokane.

Dust Devils 6, Canadians 3 — Tri-City used a five-run fourth inning to burst ahead and beat Vancouver at T-Mobile Park.

Spencer Horwitz had four hits for the second consecutive game and Sebastian Espino hit a two-run homer for Vancouver.

Jack Dashwood allowed eight hits and two runs in seven innings for Tri-City.

TUESDAY, AUG. 17

Pro baseball

Mariners 3, Rangers 1 — Former Oregon Duck Tyler Anderson pitched a fine game for Seattle (64-56) in the opener of a road trip at Texas.

Anderson gave up three hits and one run (a homer) while striking out four and walking none in six innings for the win. Three relievers each allowed one hit but no runs. Mitch Haniger and Ty France each had RBI sacrifice flies and Luis Torrens homered in the ninth inning.

Dust Devils 8, Canadians 5 — Tri-City had 14 hits, including four by Jeremy Arocho and a homer by former UO player Kenyon Yovan, in the win over Vancouver at Ron Tonkin Field.

Spencer Horwitz went 4-for-4 for Vancouver (41-50).

Hillsboro Hops — The opening game of a six-game series at Spokane was postponed because of inclement weather. It'll be made up as part of a doubleheader Sunday, Aug. 22. Hillsboro enters the series with a record of 42-47.
