North Plains brings back delicious tradition
Almost 70 years ago, the Dixie Mountain Grange outside North Plains created a delicious tradition around Father's Day year after year. The grange's Strawberry Festival would ring in the summer by offering strawberry shortcake and fresh whipped cream to hungry locals.
But now, the day of coveted seasonal treats has new organizers, as The North Plains Events Association launches its own Shortcake Feast on Saturday, June 15.
Sherrie Simmons, a resident of North Plains, is the president of the association, which also organizes the town's one-of-a-kind Elephant Garlic Festival each summer. After the grange decided to stop holding the shortcake festival, the group wanted to continue the tradition, Simmons said, because many people looked forward to it as a staple of the community.
The community center recently received a facelift, with new paint inside and out, and the feast will be able to celebrate the updates, Simmons said.
The feast is all-ages and there will be long tables for people to sit at and eat.
Shortcakes will come in three sizes — small, medium and large — and must be eaten on location, with no takeout opportunities.
Not only can people stop by and eat, but a small market with vendors will be on location selling their wares.
The proceeds will go toward developing scholarships through the event association, Simmons said.
"Who doesn't love fresh strawberry shortcake?" she said. "It is a great way to celebrate some family time that weekend and it would be nice for people to come to check us out."
